I’ve been renovating my flat and am super excited about some brightly coloured rubber floor tiles that I have just laid.
Those of you who have been reading this blog for a while will know that I bought my flat from an 86 year old lady nearly two and half years ago. She moved down to Devon and my son and I moved in. Unfortunately for all of us when she moved out she couldn’t take her beloved kitchen with avocado skin-coloured work tops with her. For the past two years, my kitchen has been the envy of all of my friends, family and neighbours. Or maybe not!
Do you like the tiles?
Renovations were always part of my plan when I bought the flat, but I knew that it would be a couple of years before I could actually afford to rip out the old kitchen, bathroom and heating system, tear down a couple of walls and really put our personal stamp on the place.
The builders finished a few weeks ago and we finally moved back into the flat after a month of living with my parents.
There is still a hell of a lot to do. The builders have done the structural stuff; they’ve installed the kitchen and bathroom and they’ve done all of the plumbing and the electrics. The rest is very much down to me (and my amazing parents of course – they are always willing to roll up their sleeves and get elbow deep in some Little Greene paint).
I made a decision early on that I would not be decorating this flat with re-sale in mind. This is our home and I am really keen that it reflects our personalities.
I have to confess that I have gone for an all white kitchen in high gloss with integrated handles. I am not a cook, so I will be able to keep it clean. It looks really clean and slick. The worktops are a very light grey. I also intend to paint the walls white and will jazz the whole thing up with accessories, a brightly coloured blind at the window, potentially a brightly coloured splash-back and a really funky kitchen floor made from rubber floor tiles.
It is the kitchen floor that I am most excited about.
I stumbled across The Colour Flooring Company. They sell rubber and vinyl floors either as tiles or in a roll. Their products come with a ten year guarantee. I like the fact that they are hard wearing and have good sound insulation (the two old ladies downstairs have sensitive ears and Cygnet likes to stomp around the flat at top speed). I also like the fact that they are environmentally friendly. They’ve been eco-certified by Blue Angel which essentially guarantees that their flooring meets high standards when it comes to the environment. Those of you who read my post about how motherhood changed me will know that this is important to me these days.
What excited me most was the fact that they do triangular, yes triangles!, rubber floor tiles in both a large selection of greys (I have a lot of grey in my flat) as well as some really bright accent colours. I bought a load of samples and decided on Shacklewell (the light grey), Rachel Point Grey (the dark grey) and Springfield Yellow.
I decided on triangular rubber floor tiles. These are the colours I have chosen.
Then, I had to figure out the pattern.
I asked my dad to draw a floor plan for my kitchen and a grid of triangles. I dug out my acrylic paints and my paint brushes and once Cygnet had gone to bed, I poured myself a glass of wine and set to painting various floor patterns for my rubber floor tiles.
Here are some of the works in progress.
There were so many options that I just couldn’t decide.
In the end, I changed my mind at the eleventh hour. My dad and I laid the rubber floor tiles without sticking them and I found that the tiles looked very different in full size to how they looked in my A4 size drawings. We dry laid the rubber floor tiles one day and stuck them the next. This is the finished article.
I cannot tell you how thrilled I am with my new kitchen and with the floor in particular. It looks awesome and makes me smile every time I go into the kitchen.
Cygnet and I have a game in which I undress him for his bath on the yellow rubber floor tiles. As we take off an item of clothing we leave it on a yellow tile and he jumps to the next one.
The Colour Flooring Company were great. I ordered my floor online at around 10pm one night and received a call from their delivery driver the next day to say they were at my door. As a company I cannot fault them.
My rubber floor tiles have been down a few days now and I am still excited about them.
Please excuse me while I go and pour myself another glass of wine and look at my floor some more.
Some things in life are made to make you smile.
P.S. Yes, this is a collaborative post, but I approached The Colour Flooring Company because I thought their tiles were awesome. All opinions (and the floor design) are most definitely my own.
